The production with the pixel tape went super well! The pixel tape made the show successful, seriously. Everyone's top comment was that they felt engulfed in the environment. Which was outdoors in a distant world, around all times of day. The tape made for some beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and helped abstract the world well. The visual theme was "summer camp" meaning a place where children were free, and they supported each other. It has a handmade feel, like the "cyc" being a wrinkly drop that became the sky, but also would get thrown open for transitions. A fun way to build and break the space we called home base.
As I was programming, I was so happy to be working with quality tape and not the amazon stuff we find at school so often! The color is deep and rich, and the way that I could put it at .015% intensity - and it would actually just glisten on, emitting a quarter of a candle flame's light - was heavenly. The main time I used this was for the "horizon awakening" just before sunrise where the space would start to glow blue at the horizon. Incredible, seriously!
I put the tape in a 3D printed channel I've designed and been making for years. It's super quick to establish, and strikes quickly too. It's also reusable and has interchangeable accessories like top hats, egg crates, and diffusers. I used half hats on the upper led tape so it was invisible to the audience. The lower row of the channel was walked on constantly so it had no half hat. (sad, when we go to Broadway I'll fix that... )
