Mirvish Productions "Blindness"
Lighting Design: Jessica Hung Han Yun
Blindness, a socially distanced sound installation produced by Mirvish Productions, marked a significant return to live theater during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, receiving widespread acclaim for its innovative approach. Adapted from José Saramago's Nobel Prize-winning novel by award-winning playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Walter Meierjohann, this immersive experience uses binaural sound design to engage the audience in a gripping narrative of an epidemic that engulfs a city.
Hanging Fixtures
Moss LED was honoured to contribute to this groundbreaking production by designing and installing 97 custom O6060C Aluminum Channels, each housing our FlexLED 210 RGB+WW+CW 24V (3000K-5600K). These fixtures were strategically installed both horizontally and vertically above the audience's seats, creating a dynamic lighting environment that embodies the intense emotions associated with blindness. Each fixture was connected using our 6-Pin Neutrik XLR Connector and secured with custom metal end caps and eyebolt hardware to the pipe grid, allowing the designer to manipulate lighting to enhance the emotional depth of the performance. The hanging fixtures were controlled by twenty-three LuxDrive8 V3 32-Channel Dimmers, set to 16-bit mode for smooth, refined dimming.
Audience Chairs
Underneath the audience seating, a total of 12,500 RawModule 12-LED RGB+W 5600K units were installed to accentuate the immersive experience. As the narrative unfolded, the audience was taken on an emotional roller coaster, with complete darkness on stage contrasting sharply with bursts of light emanating from beneath the seats, serving as a poignant reminder of their ability to see. The modules were daisy-chained using our 5-PIN Connector Field Installable Plugs, facilitating easy removal of seating when necessary. Control of these modules was managed through five LuxDrive8 V3 32-Channel Dimmers, also set to 16-bit mode for step-less dimming effects.
